Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.

Travatan (travoprost) is a prostaglandin analog effective at reducing high pressure in the eyes. The majority of patients buy Travatan to treat ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma, though it may occasionally be used in other conditions as well.

High intraocular pressure (IOP), otherwise known as ocular hypertension, can ultimately lead to glaucoma, and untreated glaucoma can ultimately lead to damaged vision or even blindness. Note that there are numerous causes of high IOP and several types of glaucoma; a doctor is needed to determine exactly which kind a given patient suffers from.

Risk factors that may increase one's chance of developing high IOP include:

  • Family history of high IOP or glaucoma
  • Over age 35
  • Unusually thin corneas
  • Black or Hispanic lineage
  • Menopause

Patients buy Travatan to treat both high IOP and open-angle glaucoma. The medication encourages drainage of ocular fluid, which in turn reduces high IOP and slows or stops high IOP from developing into glaucoma, as well as slows or stops glaucoma from further damaging the eyes.

Patients who have high IOP rarely have any symptoms until vision is damaged. It is important that anyone over age 35 have regular eye exams that check for high IOP. Eye pressure increases naturally as people age.

Treatment Overview

Travatan comes in vials, all of which include an eye dropper; depending on if one buys Travatan as a generic or by brand-name, the dropper may be removable or it may be built in to the top of the vial. It is generally only available in one strength, 0.004%.

It is very easy to use:

  • Drops are best administered in the evening.
  • Thoroughly wash and dry hands.
  • Shake the vial well.
  • Open the vial, being careful that the dropper does not touch anything.
  • Apply a single drop to the affected eye(s).
  • Close eyes for one to two minutes, while gently applying pressure to the corner of the eye nearest the nose.

High IOP begins to drop about two hours after administration with effects peaking after about 12 hours, after which they begin to decline. It is virtually unheard of for a doctor to recommend higher or more frequent dosing, and patients who buy Travatan are strongly advised not to increase dosage on their own. Studies have shown that the medication is actually less effective at reducing IOP at higher doses or with more frequent administration.

Contact lenses should be removed prior to administration and left out for at least 15 minutes.

Those who buy Travatan sometimes use other medicated eye drops. If using multiple eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between administrations, ideally more like 15 minutes. If the eye drops are not medically necessary they should not be used.

Treatment may continue for as long as it provides benefit.

Travatan

I've been using this since 2005 when I was diagnosed with high IOP. My readings have been a just a wee bit on the high side of normal since then. I have had some small side effects, but they're insign...ificant compared to going blind. Haven't noticed my eyes changing color, though I am putting drops in both eyes so maybe I just can't tell. They're still blue, at least!
